Leh Ladakh is one of India’s most spectacular high-altitude destinations, known for dramatic mountains, turquoise lakes, ancient monasteries and remote valleys. From the streets of Leh to the landscapes of Nubra and Pangong, there is plenty to explore. The official Ladakh Administration highlights Leh, Hemis, Alchi, Lamayuru, Shey, Thiksey, Pangong Lake and Nubra among the region’s major attractions. citeturn1search0turn1search2

    1. Leh Palace and Leh Old Town

Start your trip in Leh by exploring the historic town and Leh Palace. Walking through the old streets gives you a chance to experience local architecture, markets and the distinctive atmosphere of Ladakh’s capital.

    2. Shanti Stupa

Shanti Stupa is one of Leh’s best-known viewpoints. Visit around sunrise or sunset for sweeping views of Leh and the surrounding Himalayan landscape.

    3. Thiksey Monastery

Thiksey Monastery is a beautiful Buddhist monastery located near Leh. Its hilltop setting, traditional architecture and views across the Indus Valley make it a worthwhile stop for both culture and photography.

    4. Hemis Monastery

Hemis is one of Ladakh’s most important monasteries and is among the popular monasteries highlighted by the Ladakh Administration. It is a good place to learn about the region’s Buddhist heritage and traditional culture. citeturn1search0

    5. Nubra Valley and Hunder

Nubra Valley offers a striking contrast of green villages, rivers, mountains and sand dunes. Hunder is especially popular for its desert-like landscape and double-humped Bactrian camels. Diskit Monastery and Panamik are also attractions in the valley. The official tourism information places Nubra about 95 km from Leh and describes its landscapes, monasteries, hot springs and camel safaris. citeturn1search1

    6. Pangong Lake

Pangong Lake is one of the most iconic places to visit in Leh Ladakh. At almost 4,350 metres, its blue water contrasts dramatically with the barren mountains around it. The lake extends across India and China, with roughly one-third in India. citeturn1search3

    7. Khardung La

The road towards Nubra crosses the famous Khardung La pass. The high mountain landscape and panoramic views make the route a memorable part of a Ladakh road trip. Conditions can change quickly at high altitude, so follow local travel advice and road restrictions.

    8. Lamayuru

Known for its unusual lunar-like landscape, Lamayuru is an excellent day-trip option from Leh. The village is about 127 km from Leh and is home to an ancient monastery surrounded by dramatic geological formations. citeturn1search10

    9. Tso Moriri

For travellers with more time, Tso Moriri offers a quieter high-altitude lake experience. The official tourism information describes it as a high-altitude lake in the Changthang region, with Korzok village and monastery on its shores. citeturn1search0

    10. Travel Responsibly in Ladakh

Ladakh’s environment is fragile. Visitors should avoid littering, respect monasteries and local communities, and stay on permitted routes. In June 2026, the Ladakh Administration announced penalties for illegal off-roading in protected wildlife areas and urged tourists to travel responsibly. citeturn1search11

Best Way to Plan Your Trip

A first-time itinerary can combine Leh’s cultural attractions with a Nubra Valley and Pangong Lake circuit. If you have additional days, consider Lamayuru or Tso Moriri. Because Ladakh is a high-altitude region, build in time to acclimatise after arrival and check current road, weather and tourism advisories before travelling.

For the latest official tourism information, visitors can also consult the official Ladakh Tourism portal.
